Forum Riga

Cities for Europe - Freedom. Responsibility. Action

On the 11th of November Forum Riga “Cities for Europe. – Freedom. Responsibility. Action” will take place at the at the conference centre Citadele in Riga. The conference will be organized by the initiative “A Soul for Europe” in cooperation with Riga European Capital of Culture 2014.

The one-day discussion is centred around questions about how European cities can build a cultural space in which citizens are enabled to become active actors in the light of the European unification process and in this way can preserve the unalienable value of freedom.Together with representatives of past, present and future European Capitals of Culture, with politicians and civil society actors, we will explore the following questions:

  • Can Riga be seen as a “model” for an ECoC?
  • How can a positive process during an ECoC year be sustained? Can the EU have a responsibility after the end of the year?
  • How can cities and citizens actively contribute to the European unification process in cooperation with political decision makers?
  • What is the role of citizens in the development of democracy and preservation of freedom?

Therefore we are delighted to welcome participants from all over Europe including Doris Pack (former MEP), Arne Lietz (MEP), the Mayor of Riga and numerous representatives of civil society as well as members of the A Soul for Europe strategy group.

The conference will be accompanied by a “European Marketplace” in the lobby of the venue: Projects and activities from different parts of Europe show “Europe in practice”. They illustrate how citizens live Europe every day in their cities and regions.
