(1) Intro

Dear friends and colleagues,

The inclusion of civil society is imperative in political processes of the European Union. "A Soul for Europe" has lobbied for this conviction at past events like the Berlin Conference 2010 and will continue to work in this regard, as for example in the development process of European Capitals of Culture. The cross-parliamentarian Working Group of the initiative's Advisory Board will have these topics on their working agenda when they will meet next time in the middle of April in Brussels.

We look forward to an interesting and challenging year and to work together with actors from various fields across Europe!

(2) Upcoming Events/Activities

Members of the Strategy Group of "A Soul for Europe" will participate in this public hearing of the European Commission's Directorate General Education and Culture. They will bring forth the conviction of "A Soul for Europe" that the inclusion of the civil society is imperative in the development process of a European Capital of Culture in order to ensure its cultural, regional and social sustainability.

  • Advisory Board and Advisory Board Parliamentarian Working Group: Update

Following the constitutive meeting, which took place on 13 July 2010 @ European Parliament, the Advisory Board (AB) & Advisory Board Parliamentarian Working Group (ABPWG) will re-convene on 13 April 2011 for a follow-up of the initiative's projects and presentation of concrete proposals for the involvement of AB & ABPWG in the activities of 2011.

  • European Cultural Congress in Wroclaw – 9 September 2011

"A Soul for Europe" will organize a one-day conference, embedded in the European Cultural Congress (ECC) in Wroclaw, Poland. The congress is hosted by the National Audiovisual Institute (NInA). In the context of the Polish EU Council Presidency in 2011, the conference will focus on the relationship between culture and economy, the role of culture for the structural development of Europe as well as the EU media programme.

(3) Recent Events

In its contribution to this consultation, "A Soul for Europe" laments that the Report does not recognize the essential role that culture plays in promoting more sustainable social and economic development in European regions and cities. "A Soul for Europe" suggests the establishment of a mediating body to foster the collaboration between, among others, local and national governments and administrators of structural funding, local and regional cultural institutions and cultural activists, and individuals living in Europe's cities and regions. Strengthening the collaboration between these players would go a long way to further leveraging the positive impacts of EU-funded regional culture-based interventions.

The fourth Berlin Conference was organized for the first time by the young, decentralized network of "A Soul for Europe". It gathered individuals from business, civil society and politics in a dialogue about how to create the conditions in which culture can advance the European unification process.

In three panels, high-ranking individuals such as film director Wim Wenders, EU-Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou, social scientist Paul Scheffer, entrepreneur Arend Oetker and Director General of the DG Communication Claus Haugaard Sørensen exchanged their views and developed ideas. Members of the Strategy Group of "A Soul for Europe" together with members of the European Parliament Elmar Brok, Jo Leinen, Jan Olbrycht, Doris Pack and Hannes Swoboda formulated concrete proposals for:

- The role of the citizen in building Europe

- The Image of Europe

- New forms of cooperation between culture, business and politics.
